The game is played with eight 52-card packs that are shuffled and dealt by the croupier (dealer) from a dealing box, called a shoe, that releases one card at a time, face down. Each round begins with the dealer distributing two cards to each of two hands, known as a Player hand and a Bank hand. A winning baccarat hand is the one that has the lowest total of the two cards. This is determined by the digit on each card that is closest to the digit that is closest to nine.
The player and the banker can each draw a third card in some circumstances. However, this is only done if the total of their two cards is 5 or less, and it is always determined by the rules of the table.
Once the dealer has finished dealing the cards, all of the bets are collected and paid out. The baccarat commission is also collected and tracked, with a 5% fee taken by the dealer on all Banker hand winnings.
When all of the players have placed their bets, the dealer then deals two cards to each hand. The first card is dealt to the player, and the second card is dealt to the banker. Each box is then ranked, with the highest ranking combination taking the prize.
The next card is dealt to the banker, and this is followed by the third card being dealt to the player. This is repeated until all of the boxes are filled with cards. If a player’s bet matches the highest-ranked box, they win, if not, they lose that round of play.
The final digit of each card is then added up, and the total digit that is closest to nine wins. Aces count as one, 10s count as 0 and all other cards are worth their pip value.
